Grok Ai probe deepens as Elon Musk is summoned in Paris

French authorities have summoned Elon Musk for a voluntary interview on Monday in Paris as the grok ai probe into X continues to widen. The Paris prosecutor’s office is examining allegations tied to content on the platform, with officials focusing on suspected offences linked to child sexual abuse material, sexually explicit deepfakes, and other claims. It remains unclear whether Musk will appear, and prosecutors have not said what happens if he does not.

What prosecutors are examining

The probe began in January 2025 and was later expanded after concerns were raised about X’s chatbot Grok and its role in generating non-consensual sexual deepfake imagery. French prosecutors said the investigation also covers possible complicity in possessing or distributing child sexual abuse material, infringement of image rights through sexual deepfakes, and suspected fraudulent data extraction by an organised group. A February search at X’s French premises was part of the same investigation.

Officials in Paris have framed the interviews as part of a wider effort to determine whether X complies with French law while operating in the country. Musk and Linda Yaccarino, the former chief executive of X, were both invited in their capacities as managers at the time of the events under review. Other employees are scheduled to be heard as witnesses this week.

Immediate reactions from Musk and X

In response to earlier questions, X pointed to a post from Musk in which he described the probe as a “political attack. ” Musk later wrote, in reaction to a report about the case, “indeed, this needs to stop. ” X has previously denied wrongdoing and called the allegations baseless, saying the February raid reinforced its belief that the investigation distorts French law, circumvents due process, and endangers free speech.

The Paris prosecutor’s office has said the interviews are meant to allow executives to present their position on the facts and, if needed, the compliance measures they plan to implement. It declined to say whether skipping the hearing would bring sanctions.

How Grok Ai became central

The grok ai element became a key part of the case after reports and complaints raised concerns about how X’s automated systems were functioning. The investigation later expanded after Grok generated posts that allegedly denied the Holocaust and produced sexually explicit deepfakes. French prosecutors also said they alerted US authorities in March over the possibility that the controversy around sexually explicit deepfakes generated by Grok may have been deliberately orchestrated to boost the value of X and xAI.

The case now sits at the intersection of platform moderation, AI-generated content, and criminal law, with the grok ai probe drawing in both French investigators and US agencies. Whether Musk attends Monday’s voluntary interview in Paris will be the next key signal, and the inquiry is likely to keep moving through witness questioning and further legal review in the days ahead.
