China Gp: Russell wins chaotic Sprint as late Safety Car reshuffles the fight

china gp sprint racing delivered an immediate jolt on Saturday, as George Russell converted pole into victory in a 19-lap showdown at the Chinese Grand Prix. Russell beat Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton after a frenetic opening fight for the lead and a late Safety Car that triggered a pit-stop rush. The Sprint turned on early position swaps between Russell and Hamilton, then tightened again when Nico Hulkenberg’s stricken Audi brought out the caution and forced the leading group into a final, decisive sequence.

Russell holds on after early lead swaps

Russell started from pole and initially held the lead through the opening corners. The calm did not last: Hamilton, starting fourth, surged forward and took the lead with a move to the inside at Turn 9, briefly flipping the order at the front.

What followed was a straight fight between the two, with the lead changing hands across the opening laps. Russell made the key pass into the Turn 14 hairpin on Lap 5, and from there he built a gap back to Hamilton and to Leclerc, who had closed in from behind as the front battle intensified.

Late Safety Car sparks pit-stop scramble in China Gp Sprint

The finish tightened when a Safety Car was called after Hulkenberg’s Audi needed to be retrieved. The leading drivers made a late pit stop under the caution, and the reshuffle brought Leclerc firmly into the fight for the win.

Leclerc ultimately finished just 0. 6 seconds behind Russell, having also gained the upper hand over his team mate in the closing phase. Hamilton, after being drawn into the late pit-lane squeeze, recovered to third. He had dropped behind Lando Norris and was forced to stack behind Leclerc during the late flurry in the pits, a costly pause in a Sprint where every second mattered.

Penalties, collisions, and the points fight behind

Behind the top three, Norris took fourth ahead of the second Mercedes of Kimi Antonelli. Antonelli’s Sprint was defined by a poor start from the front row and a Turn 4 collision with Isack Hadjar on the opening lap; Antonelli later served a 10-second penalty in the pits for the incident.

Oscar Piastri finished sixth for McLaren after being overtaken late on by Antonelli. Racing Bulls’ Liam Lawson and Haas’ Ollie Bearman collected the final points on offer after not pitting under the late caution.

Max Verstappen and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10. They were followed by Pierre Gasly, Carlos Sainz, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Franco Colapinto. Hadjar finished 15th ahead of Alex Albon, Fernando Alonso, Lance Stroll, and Sergio Perez as the final classified runner for Cadillac.

Hulkenberg did not finish, with Valtteri Bottas and Arvid Lindblad also failing to reach the flag; Lindblad suffered an opening-lap spin and Bottas had a loss of power.

What’s next

With the Sprint settled and the field showing clear pace at the front, attention now turns to what comes after Saturday’s scramble and whether the same drivers can control the next phase without another late interruption. After Russell’s win and Leclerc’s late charge, the Chinese Grand Prix weekend heads forward with momentum—and with china gp tension already running high after a Safety Car turned the final laps into a pressure test for the leaders.
