Jim Furyk set for Ryder Cup return as US captain in 2027

Jim Furyk is set to return as U. S. Ryder Cup captain for the 2027 matches in Ireland, with the selection expected to be confirmed by the PGA of America soon. The move comes as the Americans try to reset after recent losses and look for stability at the top of the team. The decision follows Tiger Woods removing himself from consideration, leaving Furyk as the choice for the role.
Jim Furyk and the U. S. search for a reset
Jim Furyk would become only the fourth U. S. captain since 1979 to get a second chance in the modern Ryder Cup era, when continental Europe became part of the competition. The 2027 event is scheduled for Ireland, and the U. S. side is trying to respond after Europe has controlled much of the last three decades.
Furyk’s first run as captain came in 2018 in Paris, where Europe won 17 1/2 to 10 1/2. That week also carried extra pressure for the American side, with the U. S. captain’s picks struggling across the matches and internal tension spilling into the open.
Jim Furyk has remained closely tied to the event for years. He was a player on multiple U. S. teams and later served in leadership roles, including vice-captain duties in several recent editions. He also led the Americans to victory as Presidents Cup captain in 2024.
What changed after Tiger Woods stepped aside
Three people familiar with the selection process said the Ryder Cup committee settled on Furyk after Tiger Woods removed himself from contention. Woods had been considered the favorite for the role before stepping away from consideration after his March 27 arrest on suspicion of DUI. Those people spoke on condition of anonymity because the PGA of America has not made a formal announcement.
When asked for confirmation, the PGA of America said Friday: “We look forward to sharing details regarding our 2027 U. S. Ryder Cup captain announcement soon. ” Jim Furyk declined to comment in a text message.
The move also reflects the broader state of the U. S. team, which has been trying to recover after back-to-back defeats. Europe’s latest win came under captain Luke Donald, who is set to return again in Ireland.
Why Jim Furyk remains a central figure
Jim Furyk has been involved in the Ryder Cup for roughly 30 years, first as a player and later as a captain and assistant leader. He played in nine straight Ryder Cups from 1997 through 2014 and was part of two winning U. S. teams and seven losing teams.
He has also built a reputation inside the team room as a steady voice. In a 2023 television interview, Furyk said he liked being both captain and vice-captain because it kept him close to the competition and involved in the tactical side of the week.
For the U. S. side, the next step is the formal announcement. Until then, Jim Furyk is the expected answer to a role the Americans hope will bring a sharper edge and a clearer plan in 2027.
