Kevin Mckidd Lands ITV Thriller After Grey’s Anatomy Exit

Kevin Mckidd is heading into a new TV chapter after confirming his exit from Grey’s Anatomy. The actor will lead ITV’s upcoming thriller The Only Suspect, a role announced on April 22 Eastern Time as the series prepares to begin filming in London this spring. The project casts Mckidd as Alex, a man whose carefully built life is threatened by a buried secret from 30 years ago.
A new lead role for Kevin Mckidd
The Only Suspect places Kevin Mckidd at the center of a four-part British drama set in a leafy London suburb. The story follows Alex and Beth, a devoted couple whose picture-perfect life hides a devastating truth, with the plot moving between the present day and mid-1990s Camden. In the opening stretch of the story, a man buries a body during a violent storm in the summer of 1995.
Three decades later, the abandoned railway track where the body was hidden is being turned into a nature trail, and that work threatens to expose what Alex has spent years concealing. The series synopsis says Alex has lived under an assumed name and now faces the collapse of everything he has built. As the ground is broken near the secret, he is forced to decide how far he is willing to go to keep the truth buried.
Kevin Mckidd calls it a coming home
Kevin Mckidd said the role feels like “coming home” after two decades working on the Grey’s set in Los Angeles. He said the character of Alex is “complex and multilayered” and that the part is exciting to explore. That marks his first role since announcing that Dr. Owen Hunt will be written out when Grey’s Anatomy reaches its season 22 finale on May 7 Eastern Time.
In his departure statement, Mckidd said Grey’s Anatomy has been a huge chapter of his life, creatively and personally. He also said playing Dr. Owen Hunt and directing on the show shaped him enormously, and added that he is looking forward to building new work and telling new stories in the next phase of his career.
What The Only Suspect is about
The Only Suspect is adapted from Louise Candlish’s novel by Simon Ashdown. The thriller is being produced by Red Planet Pictures, with ITV’s Polly Hill and Huw Kennair-Jones ordering the project. Farren Blackburn is directing, and filming is set to begin in London this spring.
the production details, the series will be distributed internationally by Fremantle. The story is built around obsession, deception, betrayal, and the consequences of youth, with the abandoned railway line turning a neighborhood improvement into a looming crisis for Alex.
Why the role matters now
The casting makes Kevin Mckidd’s next move clear at a moment when his long run on Grey’s Anatomy is ending. The new drama gives him a lead role in a suspense story built around secrecy and pressure, while also tying his return to the UK to a project he described as personal.
For ITV, the series arrives with a familiar creative team and a source novel already tied to the channel through earlier work from the same production company. For Kevin Mckidd, The Only Suspect is the clearest signal yet of what comes after Grey’s Anatomy, and the next chapter is already in motion.
