Deshaun Watson Gets First-Minicamp Look as Browns Open QB Competition

The Browns opened voluntary veteran minicamp on April 21 in East Time terms, beginning a three-day stretch that runs through April 23 and gives the new coaching staff its first on-field look with the team during offseason work. deshaun watson was part of the opening quarterback rotation as the Browns started sorting out reps in the early stages of competition. Todd Monken said the day showed energy, command and a team-wide willingness to work through a demanding first practice.
Early reps set the tone
On Day 1, all three quarterbacks took part in the period work, with the Browns rotating who opened both individual and team drills. Monken said the plan was designed to give the staff a clear look at each passer, and that deshaun watson would share reps with the starters while Shedeur Sanders was set to get a few more opportunities. Sanders opened the first 11-on-11 period, Watson followed, and the team used a mix of handoffs and live play to begin the evaluation.
Watson took the first snaps in the 7-on-7 segment and completed passes to Harold Fannin Jr. and Jack Stoll on consecutive throws. He later connected with Tylan Wallace and Malachi Corley. Dillon Gabriel followed in the same period, while Sanders closed it with completions to Jamari Thrash, Isaiah Bond and Wallace before each quarterback also had an interception during the drill work.
Monken liked the pace and the energy
Monken said the opening day felt like a real step forward for the new staff and the players. He called it “awesome” to get on the grass, praised the team for handling the work and said the group showed “juice” and connection even with the jump from Phase 1 to a Phase 3 practice. He added that the quarterbacks were in command, checked plays well and never looked lost during the team periods.
The Browns closed practice with two more 11-on-11 periods, and all three quarterbacks continued to rotate through the work. For now, the focus is on evaluation, not final answers, and the staff plans to keep changing who takes which reps over the next two days and later in the offseason program.
What the first day means
The opening session gave Cleveland its first live offseason look at how the quarterback room functions inside Monken’s system. It also showed that the coaching staff is already using the minicamp structure to test different combinations and gather information on all three passers.
That makes the next practices important for deshaun watson, Sanders and Gabriel, because each rep will help shape the staff’s view of the room. If the first day was any indication, the Browns intend to keep the competition active, detailed and tightly monitored as minicamp continues in ET.
