For Yamaha, the logic is clear: a fresh rider profile fits a project that is effectively being rebuilt. For Rins, the consequences are harsher. The lack of performance from the new V4-engined Yamaha means it is becoming harder to see where a factory seat might open for him if his current deal runs out.

At the same time, Rins’s own physical recovery appears to have improved only as Yamaha’s results have worsened. He spent much of his first season at the team barely able to walk after shattering his leg at Mugello, and even now his form has not returned to the level that once made him one of the sharpest riders in the paddock.

Rins’s frustration has been visible in direct language. At COTA, he said the bike “wouldn’t respond” at key moments, that he was “going wide at every corner, ” and that he felt “useless on the bike. ” He added: “What the hell am I doing here?”

Yamaha boss Paolo Pavesio has already described the situation facing the marque as having a “mountain to climb. ” That assessment matches the broader mood around the team, where the development path is still being tested and the competitive cost is already showing in the results.
