Ben White’s England return exposes an unresolved split — and Tuchel wants it addressed

Ben White is back in the England camp for the first time since 2022, but the recall comes with an unusually blunt message from head coach Thomas Tuchel: whatever happened around the defender’s early departure from the Qatar World Cup cannot remain unspoken inside the squad.
Why is Ben White back now — and why does Tuchel think a “second chance” is necessary?
Tuchel said he called Ben White into his squad this week after Jarell Quansah withdrew through injury, describing the defender’s return as a chance to open what he called “a new page. ” The coach framed the selection in moral as well as sporting terms, saying “everyone deserves a second chance, ” while also acknowledging the unresolved nature of the episode that led to White’s absence from international duty.
White has not featured for England since leaving the Qatar World Cup during Gareth Southgate’s tenure. At the time, the Football Association cited “personal reasons” for White’s departure. Southgate later revealed that Arsenal had told the Football Association that White did not want to be considered for selection before the 2024 European Championship. Another account included in the context states White left the camp after a disagreement with then-assistant manager Steve Holland and then made himself “unavailable for selection” for the remainder of Southgate’s time in charge, which ended after the Euros in July 2024.
Tuchel said White did not want to speak about what happened in Qatar, and Tuchel added he does not know exactly what happened. Still, he made clear that a player leaving a tournament is inherently serious, saying that if a player leaves from a tournament “it’s never good and it never can be nothing. ”
What does “clear the air” mean inside the England camp — and who is it meant for?
Tuchel repeatedly returned to a single phrase: “clear the air. ” He said it is necessary that Ben White clears the air with his England team-mates, specifically pointing to those who were in the World Cup squad with him. Tuchel presented it as an internal team matter rather than a public apology, saying he is not sure if “apologise” is the right word, but that an explanation among players is “in progress. ”
Tuchel also said White has begun talking to team-mates about the events of 2022, describing those conversations as part of restoring normal working relationships within the group. The coach’s framing suggests the priority is cohesion: clearing misunderstandings, addressing discomfort, and removing any lingering uncertainty among players who experienced the disruption of a mid-tournament exit.
Tuchel added that White’s reaction to the call-up was immediate and emotional. He said the response came “within seconds, ” and characterized it as euphoric, positive, and emotional, which Tuchel took as evidence that the player “really means it” about returning. Tuchel also said White has trained well in camp and “has not put a foot wrong” with him.
What are the stakes now — selection battles, crowd reaction, and the next matches?
White is competing with Djed Spence and Tino Livramento at right-back for the friendly against Uruguay on Friday at Wembley, and Tuchel urged supporters to back him. Asked what reaction he expected from the crowd, Tuchel’s answer was direct: “Support. ” He emphasized that White plays for England and that the team is in what he called a positive moment, while also noting there will be new players on the pitch.
England have friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley in the last international break before Tuchel names his squad for the World Cup in the USA, Mexico and Canada this summer. Tuchel has named a 35-man squad for the two games, with 11 players, including captain Harry Kane, and Arsenal duo Bukayo Saka and Declan Rice, joining on Saturday morning after being given time off to rest.
Tuchel also addressed another selection point during the same period, saying he again omitted Real Madrid right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Tuchel called it “a sporting choice, ” adding that such decisions can feel unfair but must be made.
As for Ben White, Tuchel pointed to both the circumstances and the player’s demeanor: the recall came late because of Quansah’s withdrawal, but Tuchel said White’s conduct and training have been “very good” and have shown his quality. The coach’s public insistence on clearing the air sets a clear expectation for what must happen next inside the camp: a return to the squad, but not a return to silence.
