Peacock Theater becomes the Oscars’ next home in 2029—while Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre still hosts the milestone 100th show

The peacock theater is set to host the Academy Awards beginning in 2029, marking a major venue shift for a ceremony that will still stage its 100th Oscars at Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in 2028. The transition, announced Thursday by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG, places the event inside the L. A. Live entertainment complex in downtown Los Angeles and locks in a long-term run that extends a full decade beyond the move.

Why is Peacock Theater becoming the Oscars’ venue—and what exactly was announced?

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and AEG said the Oscars will move from Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre to the L. A. Live entertainment complex starting in 2029. The 101st Oscars ceremony will be held at the peacock theater, and the arrangement is set to keep the ceremony there through 2039.

The announcement frames the switch as a partnership with significant venue work attached. AEG said it will undertake comprehensive enhancements to the theater, including upgrades to stage, sound and lighting systems, lobbies, backstage facilities, and other production-critical areas. AEG also said it will collaborate closely with the Academy to incorporate bespoke design elements needed to accommodate the Oscars ceremony.

What changes are planned at L. A. Live—and how will the red carpet shift?

L. A. Live’s recently expanded plaza will host red carpet arrivals and activities, moving a centerpiece of Oscars night into downtown Los Angeles. The same announcement ties the new setting to broader production planning: the planned upgrades include both public-facing areas, such as lobbies, and operational areas, such as backstage facilities and additional production-critical spaces.

The plan described by AEG emphasizes technical and logistical readiness—stage capability, sound, lighting, and backstage infrastructure—alongside customized design elements. The stated aim is to adapt the venue to the requirements of the Oscars ceremony as it relocates from its longtime home.

What stays the same until 2028—and what else changes in 2029?

The Academy Awards will continue at the Dolby Theatre through the 100th Oscars in 2028. The ceremony will be televised live on ABC and in more than 200 territories worldwide through that 2028 milestone.

Beginning in 2029, the theater will be the first venue to host the Oscars when it becomes available on YouTube through a deal with the Academy that also starts in 2029. The move therefore pairs a new physical home at L. A. Live with a new availability arrangement starting the same year.

By committing through 2039, the organizers are signaling a long runway for the new downtown setup even as the final years at Dolby Theatre carry the ceremony to its 100th edition before the handoff to the peacock theater for the 101st show.
