Northwestern University backs ‘Hop Around Evanston’ as spring shuttle pilot reaches local businesses

northwestern university students, faculty and staff, along with Evanston residents and visitors, now have free access to a new shuttle service this spring through a pilot program called “Hop Around Evanston. ” The Saturday-evening service is designed to help riders explore Evanston neighborhoods, local businesses, and several well-known landmarks.
What happens when Northwestern University and local partners expand free Saturday-evening mobility?
“Hop Around Evanston” is a pilot program sponsored by Northwestern and co-hosted with the Evanston Chamber of Commerce. The service is open to a broad mix of riders—students, employees, residents, and visitors—positioning the shuttle as both a campus-adjacent convenience and a community-facing amenity.
EL Da’ Sheon Nix, director of community relations at Northwestern, said the program is intended to encourage people to get out and explore as warmer weather returns, including visiting small businesses and grabbing a meal across Evanston neighborhoods.
What if the route design turns a simple loop into a weekend exploration tool?
Riders travel on a loop using the University’s hybrid electric bus fleet. The loop stretches north to Central Street, south to Howard Street, east to Chicago Avenue, and west to Dodge Avenue, giving riders access to multiple parts of the city within one circulating route.
The program highlights destinations that range from neighborhood corridors—such as restaurants, pubs, and galleries on Central Street and Main Street—to landmarks including the Grosse Point Lighthouse, the Ladd Arboretum, and the Evanston Ecology Center. By pairing dining and cultural stops with recognizable civic sites, the shuttle frames an evening outing as a curated circuit rather than a single-point trip.
What if the spring schedule becomes the measure of demand?
The shuttle operates each Saturday evening from April 4 to June 20 (ET). With that defined seasonal window, the pilot concentrates usage into a predictable weekly rhythm, allowing riders to build the shuttle into weekend plans while also giving organizers a clear operating period for assessing how the service performs.
For now, the program’s focus remains straightforward: free access for a wide rider base, a fixed loop spanning key north-south and east-west boundaries, and a set of evening hours aligned with dining, arts, and leisure activity. In that sense, northwestern university is tying transportation to place-based exploration—making it easier for people to move between neighborhoods and destinations on a spring Saturday night.
