Highpoint and the last drive: a homicide investigation after a car slams into a High Point home

highpoint arrived with the sound of impact: a vehicle striking a home in the 500 block of Anaheim Street in High Point, drawing officers to the scene at about 10: 45 p. m. Thursday. Inside the wrecked car, police found the driver with multiple gunshot wounds—an injury detectives now say began somewhere else, before the crash brought the violence into a neighborhood’s front yard.
What happened on Anaheim Street in High Point?
Officers responded to a report of a vehicle hitting a home in the 500 block of Anaheim Street. When they arrived, they found the driver, Stanley J. Lerebours, identified by police as a 35-year-old Raleigh man, inside the wrecked vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.
Guilford County EMS transported Lerebours to the hospital in critical condition. Police said he died several hours later. The case is being investigated as a homicide.
Highpoint and the unanswered question: where was the shooting?
Detectives with the High Point Police Department Violent Crimes Unit believe Lerebours was shot at a different location and then drove away before crashing into the home. Investigators are working to determine where the initial crime happened.
In the span between the presumed shooting location and Anaheim Street, the only confirmed trace is the driver’s final path: a wounded man still behind the wheel long enough to reach a residential block, where the crash turned a private emergency into a public scene.
How are police asking the public to help?
Police are asking anyone with information to contact Crimestoppers of High Point at 336-883-4000 or the High Point Police Department at 336-883-3224. Investigators have not identified where the initial crime occurred, and the request for tips signals an active effort to reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.
Police said this is the third criminal homicide in the city of High Point this year.
