The National Weather Service framed the Phoenix heat as unusually early in the calendar, noting that the average first 105-degree day of the year normally occurs on May 22. It also noted that the last time Phoenix temperatures climbed into the hundreds during March was almost 40 years ago. The Phoenix office said daily records were expected to be broken each day through Sunday, by as much as 10 degrees, with a peak expected for Friday.
Elsewhere in the region, the National Weather Service in Las Vegas said daily and monthly temperature records were continuing to be rewritten as the historic March heatwave persists into next week. Las Vegas set a March record on Wednesday. In Reno, Nevada, the week has brought record-setting warmth, with temperatures expected to peak on Friday.
