Gonzales, listed at 6-foot-6 and 277 pounds, has emerged as one of Boston’s breakout prospects this spring while filling in during major league games. He is ranked as the organization’s No. 6 prospect by MLB Pipeline, and in limited opportunities with the big league club he has already produced exit velocities that stack up with the hardest-hit balls in the sport.
The loudest example came on March 2 in Dunedin: a 117. 3 mph single. Statcast had it as the second-hardest hit ball by any player in MLB this spring up to that point, and it was framed as the kind of impact typically reserved for the game’s biggest sluggers. Before that, Gonzales also hit a 110 mph lineout to shortstop in his first game with the major league group on Feb. 26, another early sign that his bat speed plays at the highest level.
The run of notable moments continued on March 7, when he collected an RBI single in a rain-shortened 2-0 win over the Rays. The Red Sox, as part of their spring routine, bring minor leaguers up as backups and fill-ins, and with much of the major league outfield group away for the World Baseball Classic, Gonzales has been among the prospects getting expanded looks.
Big Papi delivers the loudest endorsement
Ortiz did not hide his reaction when asked about Gonzales’ ceiling, zeroing in on the combination of size and tools that is already showing up in game action.
“Oh my god, he’s a big kid man, ” Ortiz said in Fort Myers. “I hope he stays healthy and continues working extremely hard, I mean, he’s got so many tools to begin to be a superstar. ”
Gonzales, speaking earlier this week by phone with assistance from Red Sox player development manager Justin Frometa interpreting, said the March 2 bolt surprised him.
“Very surprised, ” Gonzales said. “Obviously (I’m going to) keep working hard and hopefully God willing I know there’s more in the tank because I’m trying to get to 120-plus. ”
He also described what the experience around the major league club is giving him right now. “I learn a lot being up there, ” Gonzales said. “You kind of see the way big leaguers go about their business, how they act and the way they handle themselves so it’s a big learning experience for me. ”
Rising résumé: signing, early production, and showcases
Gonzales was signed for $250, 000 out of the Dominican Republic as an international free agent ahead of the 2024 season, then made an immediate internal impact by earning the club’s Latin Program Player of the Year. He made his debut stateside in 2025 and batted. 281 with four home runs, 23 doubles, 12 stolen bases and a. 753 OPS in 93 games, most of them at Low-A Salem.
He also participated in the 2025 Futures at Fenway South showcase, where he hit a home run over JetBlue Park’s Green Monster, and he is expected to play in next week’s Spring Breakout showcase as well.
