A27 incidents close sections and leave a motorcyclist injured as disruption continues

The a27 corridor through Chichester has seen multiple collisions that prompted road closures, queueing traffic and a hospitalisation, creating a concentrated period of disruption on and around the bypass.

What happened on the A27 Chichester Bypass?

A series of separate incidents affected the Chichester stretch of the A27. Early in the morning a rolled-over van forced an eastbound closure from A259 Havant Road (Emsworth Junction) to A259 Cathedral Way (Fishbourne Roundabout), with queues extending to the A3M while the westbound side remained open towards Portsmouth. The incident was first reported at 6. 31am and a live map noted the closure had been in place since 05: 50.

Later, a collision involving a car and a motorbike at Fishbourne roundabout on the A27 left the motorcyclist, a man in his 60s, with serious injuries; he was taken to hospital following the crash at around 2. 50pm. That incident led to a partial road closure to recover vehicles and eastbound motorists faced delays of around 13 minutes.

Separately, a crash involving a lorry and a car on the A27 Chichester Bypass at the A259 Bognor Road Roundabout resulted in partial blockage and queueing traffic in both directions.

What are the immediate impacts and where were delays felt?

  • Eastbound closure between A259 Havant Road (Emsworth Junction) and A259 Cathedral Way (Fishbourne Roundabout); queues reached the A3M.
  • Westbound carriageway remained open towards Portsmouth during the rolled-over van incident.
  • Motorcyclist in his 60s taken to hospital with serious injuries after a car-and-bike collision at Fishbourne roundabout; road partially closed for vehicle recovery.
  • Collision at A259 Bognor Road Roundabout involving a lorry and a car caused partial blockages and queueing traffic both ways on the Chichester Bypass.
  • Reported eastbound delays of around 13 minutes following the Fishbourne roundabout crash.

What are authorities asking of the public?

Sussex Police are investigating the incident at Fishbourne roundabout and have asked witnesses or anyone with relevant information, including CCTV or dashcam footage of vehicles in the area at the time, to come forward. Information can be reported online or by calling 101, quoting serial 767 of 30/01.

Road users should expect disruption where closures or partial blockages have been logged and plan alternative routes if travelling through the Chichester bypass area while recovery and investigations continue.
