Darron Lee and the ChatGPT trail: a courtroom contradiction between an ‘accidental fall’ and evidence of violence

Darron Lee appeared in court Monday for a preliminary hearing on charges of first-degree murder and tampering with evidence, and the state’s presentation centered on a clash between what was captured on police body camera and what detectives and prosecutors said they uncovered in the home—along with questions they said were posed to ChatGPT from a phone linked to Darron Lee.
What did Darron Lee tell police—while the scene raised concerns?
Police body camera footage played in court captured Darron Lee describing what he claimed was the moment he found his girlfriend unresponsive inside their Ooltewah home. In that footage, Darron Lee told a police officer the victim—identified in court as 29-year-old Gabriella Perpetuo—may have slipped and fallen in the shower, while also saying he did not know what had happened to her.
Investigators, however, characterized the scene differently during testimony. Investigators said the interior of the home raised immediate concerns, pointing to evidence of a violent struggle and injuries they said were inconsistent with an accidental fall.
One detail emphasized in court was the presence of blood. Detectives testified that BlueStar technology revealed the presence of blood in the Ooltewah home. Separately, a police report described blood found through the house along with broken glass. The hearing in Hamilton County Criminal Court was presented as the latest development in a case that has drawn national attention.
Darron Lee and ChatGPT: what questions were introduced in court?
Prosecutors introduced what they described as unusual evidence: testimony indicating that Darron Lee consulted ChatGPT on how to deal with a person who is unresponsive. The message was described as coming from Darron Lee’s phone.
Detectives also described another question they said Darron Lee posed to ChatGPT, and prosecutors showed ChatGPT’s response in court. The response presented to jurors included the line: “Here’s what to say without framing it as police trouble. ”
In addition, prosecutors said Darron Lee asked ChatGPT about what injuries would be consistent with someone falling in the shower—an issue that overlaps with what police body camera footage captured him suggesting at the scene.
What injuries and legal stakes were outlined at the preliminary hearing?
Authorities described significant injuries to Gabriella Perpetuo. Authorities said Perpetuo had “multiple stab wounds, black eyes, bite marks, and blood coming from her nose and mouth. ” Prosecutors previously told the court the victim suffered blunt force trauma and multiple other injuries.
Darron Lee faces a first-degree murder charge in the death of Gabriella Perpetuo, whose body deputies found inside a home on Snow Cone Way. Prosecutors have not ruled out seeking the death penalty against Darron Lee.
Beyond the criminal case, Darron Lee also faces a $50 million wrongful-death lawsuit. The lawsuit was filed by Perpetuo’s family and seeks compensatory and punitive damages.
Darron Lee is a former NFL linebacker and was a first-round pick of the Jets in 2016. He also played for the Chiefs and the Bills.
