Why did Saint Augustine’s University file for Chapter 11?
The university said it made a voluntary Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing after a careful evaluation of its financial realities. Court filings show debt in the range of $50 million to $100 million, with 200 to 999 creditors and $14. 4 million owed to the Internal Revenue Service. The school also listed assets valued between $1 million and $500 million, underscoring the scale of the challenge now before it.
Chapter 11 is meant to give an institution room to reorganize. In this case, the university says the process will help it address financial challenges in an orderly and transparent way, while continuing operations during the court-supervised restructuring. University leaders say a plan of reorganization is being developed for submission to the court.
What does the filing mean for accreditation and students?
One of the clearest shifts in the case is the decision not to continue litigation tied to accreditation status. The university said continuing that fight would not be a prudent use of resources. That marks a major change after more than two years of legal efforts to maintain accreditation.
Instead, the school says it will focus on supporting students through teach-out agreements, developing non-degree certificates and apprenticeship programs, and building a pathway toward reaccreditation. The institution said this approach was reached in cooperation with its accreditor to help impacted students graduate from an accredited institution.
The accreditation status is set to conclude May 15. The university had previously won an injunction in August allowing it to maintain accreditation and proceed with the fall semester, but that legal path is now being set aside.

Leadership is shifting at the same time as the financial restructuring. Interim President Dr. Jennie Ward Robinson has stepped down, and Dr. Verjanis Peoples has been named interim president. The university said it will work with creditors, donors, alumni, and community partners as it moves through the process.
That group includes graduates who say the crisis did not appear overnight. Alumni told the university’s financial troubles could have been avoided and said they had raised concerns for years about the school’s future. Alumni Steve Williams described the filing as the “theft of the university, ” adding that many graduates had been “screaming for help. ”

Bankruptcy lawyer David Mills explained that Chapter 11 is designed to allow organizations to reorganize debt, shed unprofitable leases and contracts, and restructure. He also noted that bankruptcy does not automatically mean liquidation or closure, even if the risk remains.
The university says it enters this process with support from its primary lending partner, Self-Help Ventures Fund. Board members say the filing offers a comprehensive path to address financial challenges and move forward on a stronger footing. The school must submit a full accounting of its assets and liabilities to the court within 14 days unless it receives an extension.
For now, the campus remains open in name and function, even if much of the physical scene suggests otherwise.
