Bloomington Indiana Weather: Kirkwood shooting leaves 5 wounded, no suspects in custody

Bloomington Indiana Weather took a sharp turn into a public safety crisis early Sunday, April 26, after gunfire erupted on Kirkwood Avenue near Indiana University. Bloomington Police Department Chief Mike Diekhoff said five people were wounded by gunfire and are in stable condition, while no suspects were in custody as of Monday afternoon. The investigation centered on the 400 block of East Kirkwood Avenue, where officers heard what they believed to be multiple gunshots just before 12: 30 a. m.
Police say the scene turned chaotic fast
Investigators said the crowd in the street began scattering after the shots rang out. Officers found shell casings at the scene and located multiple injured people, with some taken to local hospitals by ambulance, one transported by a BPD squad car, and others arriving by personal vehicles. A later city update said one person suffered a bullet wound, four others were injured by bullet fragments, and additional victims were hurt with cuts and scrapes while trying to flee.
Officials also said the event began after an alleged fight between two females near Five Guys on Kirkwood Avenue. Video and cell phone footage reviewed by investigators showed multiple individuals drawing handguns, and two people, later clarified to be males, fired their weapons after the confrontation. Police have not released official descriptions of the two suspects.
Victims remain in stable condition
At a Sunday press conference, BPD Chief Mike Diekhoff said all victims were in stable condition and all but one had been released from the hospital. The city said it was still working to confirm details and would not fill information gaps with assumptions. Bloomington Mayor Kerry Thomson later said the city did not know who was involved, where they were from, or what affiliations they may have had with the city.
Bloomington Indiana Weather may have been the phrase on many people’s screens, but the reality on the ground was a fast-moving emergency that drew in local and state resources. The Indiana University Police Department, Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, and Indiana State Police assisted at the scene, and aerial and helicopter support was used to document and investigate what happened.
Campus alerts and wider response
An IU Notify Alert on Sunday morning said police responded to shots fired on Kirkwood Avenue west of Dunn Street, and another notice stated that no shots were fired on the IU campus. That distinction mattered as officers worked near a large crowd gathered for Little 500 Weekend festivities.
Authorities asked anyone with information or video footage of the shooting to contact detective Chris Scott at 812-339-4477. As the investigation continues, the key unanswered questions remain the same: who fired, who was involved, and what led to the shooting on Kirkwood Avenue. For now, Bloomington Indiana Weather is tied to a city still waiting for arrests, answers, and a clearer picture of how a crowded celebration turned violent.
