In detroit, a Sunday afternoon turned in seconds from ordinary to urgent when a speeding driver crashed into a home on the west side, hit a gas meter, and sparked a fire that left a family with nothing. The scene at Puritan and Harlow, not far from Southfield Highway and Grand River, became a blur of smoke, broken walls, and neighbors trying to make sense of what they were seeing.
What happened at Puritan and Harlow?
Police said the crash happened just before 4 p. m. A driver in his 20s was speeding, sideswiped another car, and then drove straight into the home. The impact struck a gas meter and set off the fire. A neighbor’s doorbell camera captured the car inside the house shortly before both the vehicle and the home caught fire.
Everyone inside got out safely. The driver was taken to the hospital with minor injuries and ticketed for careless driving. Witnesses told Local 4 the car was moving so fast it appeared to go airborne, leaving only tow truck tire marks at the scene. In a separate account, witnesses described the driver as traveling about 60 to 70 mph before losing control.
How did neighbors respond in the moment?
Rochelle Tucker, who has lived on the street for just a few months, said her daughter was the first to hear the crash. “My daughter came downstairs and said, ‘Ma, did you hear that?’ And we come outside and we see the car actually in the house, ” Tucker said. She rushed over and found the driver still trapped inside the burning vehicle.
“I see the young man still in the car and I’m like, ‘OK guys, you got to hurry up and get him out’ — the car was on fire, ” Tucker said. She said men who had been playing basketball nearby ran over and helped pull the driver to safety. “Then they carried him to the house across the street and by the time I turned back around the house was in flames, ” Tucker said.
The power of that response was immediate, but so was the loss. In detroit, the fire did not just destroy property; it turned one street corner into a place where relief and damage arrived almost together.
What was left for the family after the fire?
One family member said the home is now unlivable and that the crash left the household displaced. She said she is the primary caregiver for her son and her elderly father, who is battling cancer. She said she lost almost everything in the fire and is trying to find temporary housing.
Three people inside the home were not hurt. Janis Coleman, who grew up in the house, stood among others looking at the wreckage and said, “It brings back a whole lot of memories and a whole lot of emotions are bundling up inside of me right now. We had such good times here, and just to look at it, it blows my mind, ” Coleman said.
Anthony Harris, who heard the impact, described the noise as two hard blasts. “We heard a boom and a big, another boom and it kinda, kinda shook us, ” Harris said. Charles King said the driver had been trying to pass a slower vehicle, clipped parked cars, lost control, and then went into the house.
What help is being offered now?
Stephen Grady Muhammad, who is from the community violence intervention group Detroit 300 2. 0, said support matters when a family is harmed in this way. “When you have a family that’s harmed like this, we have to do whatever we can do to help them. So, we do have access to some resources and we’re going to provide that and the support that they may need to get through this, ” Muhammad said.
An online fundraising campaign has also been created to help the displaced family. For the people on that block, the fire began with a crash, but it ended with a neighborhood still trying to steady itself around what happened. In detroit, the house at Puritan and Harlow now stands as a burned reminder of how quickly an ordinary afternoon can change, and how much depends on the next hand that reaches out.
