Audi Discontinues A1 Q2 as Production Shifts to EVs

Audi discontinues a1 q2 production as the automaker ends two of its long-running entry-level models and redirects plant capacity toward new electric output. The A1 supermini and Q2 crossover have now reached the end of production, closing out runs that stretched more than a decade in Spain and Germany. The move puts the spotlight on the incoming A2 E-tron, which is set to become Audi’s new entry-level model.

End of the road for two core nameplates

The A1 was built in Martorell, Spain, where 1, 389, 658 examples were produced since its launch in 2010. The Q2 was assembled in Ingolstadt, Germany, with 887, 231 units built since 2016. Audi said both models were particularly popular in Germany, the UK and Italy. Even so, the company is not replacing them directly.

Instead, Audi is moving away from building smaller, more affordable cars and concentrating on the more profitable core of the premium sector. That strategic shift leaves the German brand’s smallest combustion-engine models as the A3 hatchback and Q3 SUV. The change also frees up space at Martorell for the Volkswagen Group’s forthcoming small EV line-up, while Ingolstadt prepares for a different future.

What replaces Audi discontinues a1 q2 production

At Ingolstadt, Audi is preparing to build the Q3 from mid-2026 and make room for the A2 E-tron, a sub-£30, 000 electric model based on the Volkswagen ID 3. Audi discontinues a1 q2 production at the same time as it expands electric capacity across its network, turning the former Q2 space into a launch point for the new A2 E-tron. The company also confirmed that a further fully electric model line is scheduled to enter production in autumn 2026.

In the same announcement, Audi said its new flagship sports car will enter production next year at Böllinger Höfe. It will be based on the minimalist Concept C and inspired by the TT, while the current E-tron GT will be discontinued in due course to make space.

Immediate reaction from Audi

Audi plant manager Siegfried Schmidtner said: “The teams at the Ingolstadt plant have passionately driven the success of the Audi Q2. Working closely with Győr, we are turning a new page and will begin the integrated production of the Audi Q3 in mid-2026. ”

the tighter operational ties with Győr, along with rail-based logistics for transporting car bodies between the two sites, were established within a year. Audi also said maintaining a parallel mix of combustion, hybrid and electric production is central to building a manufacturing network that can adapt to shifting market conditions.

What happens next

For now, Ingolstadt will continue building the A3 and combustion-engine Q3 variants alongside expanded electric capacity. Neckarsulm is also being updated for revised A5 and A6 model families, while Böllinger Höfe is being prepared for the next fully electric sports model due in 2027. The end of these two compact models marks a clear break in Audi’s product plan, and Audi discontinues a1 q2 as the brand pivots toward its next phase.
