Steve Nicol Medals set for auction as ex-Liverpool star parts with prized collection

Steve Nicol Medals are heading to auction in London later this month, with the former Liverpool star putting a major part of his career collection up for sale. The standout item is an FA Cup winners’ medal expected to fetch up to £20, 000, while his European Cup winners’ medal is also among the headline lots. The sale is set to draw attention from football fans and collectors when it opens at a London auction house and runs until 14 May.
Top medals lead the sale
The FA Cup medal comes from Liverpool’s 3-1 win over Everton at Wembley Stadium in 1986, the first FA Cup title of Nicol’s career. The medal is estimated at £10, 000 to £20, 000, making it the most valuable item in the collection listed for auction.
Also going under the hammer is his European Cup winners’ medal from Liverpool’s 1984 victory over Roma in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. That medal is expected to sell for £8, 000 to £16, 000. A Football Writers’ Association Footballer of the Year award, won in 1989, carries an estimate of £2, 000 to £4, 000.
Steve Nicol Medals are part of a wider group of more than 50 lots available for worldwide bidding. Other items include the shirt Nicol wore in the Scotland v England Rous Cup match in 1988, which could fetch £1, 000 to £2, 000, and the shirt from Liverpool’s 1989 FA Cup final against Everton, which is expected to sell for £3, 000 to £6, 000.
What Nicol said about the decision
Nicol said he was pleased the auction house would ensure the haul went to true fans. He added: “It means a great deal to know they’ll continue to be appreciated for years to come. ”
Alastair McCrea, a specialist at the auction house, said: “It’s not often that material of this quality and provenance becomes available. ” He said he expected strong interest from collectors and football fans around the world.
Steve Nicol Medals are being offered alongside a broader spread of memorabilia from his playing career, which included a 13-year spell at Liverpool, three FA Cup victories and 46 goals. Nicol also won four league championships and a European Cup during a career that made him one of the most decorated figures from Liverpool’s 1980s side.
From display room to auction house
Nicol said the items had once been displayed at home in Liverpool, but later ended up packed away after he moved. He said they had been stored in the attic, drawers and basement for years, and a move eight months ago helped prompt the decision to sell.
The collection now includes 56 different items, with medals, awards and match-worn shirts among the key lots. Nicol’s background also includes time in the United States and a role as a pundit, and he said those experiences meant the trophies had remained part of his daily memory even when out of sight.
Steve Nicol Medals now return to public sale with a clear auction date in view, and the next stage will be how strongly fans and collectors respond before bidding closes on 14 May.
