The daughter is believed to be around 13 and is thought to be named Ju Ae. Lawmakers said the agency described her status as more than symbolic, with one lawmaker saying she is being treated as the de facto second-highest figure in the North’s leadership.
Why Kim Ju Ae is drawing attention
North Korea’s state-run media last month released photos of Kim and his daughter driving a new tank, after earlier images showed her firing a rifle at a shooting range and using a handgun. South Korean lawmakers said the agency sees those scenes as intended to echo Kim Jong Un’s own public military appearances in the early 2010s, when he was being prepared to succeed his father.
Lee Seong-kweun, a lawmaker from the People Power Party, said lawmakers that suggestions Kim Jong Un’s sister Kim Yo Jong might be unhappy about the focus on kim ju ae were misplaced because Kim Yo Jong does not hold independent power. The agency also said Ju Ae’s prominence appears aimed at reducing skepticism about a female successor.
Hong Min, an analyst at the Korea Institute for National Unification, urged caution, saying the tank appearance alone was not enough to conclude that kim ju ae had been confirmed as Kim Jong Un’s heir. He said she appeared alongside her father rather than independently, unlike Kim Jong Un during his own grooming period.
Immediate reaction inside the briefing room
National Intelligence Service Director Lee Jong-seok told lawmakers that Ju Ae “can be seen as the successor” and that the judgment was based on “credible intelligence. ” Democratic Party lawmaker Park Sun-won said the public display of her tank ride appeared intended to mirror Kim Jong Un’s own early military image.
That was the sharpest public assessment yet from the agency, and lawmakers said it also reflected its view that kim ju ae is being positioned more prominently than before. At the same time, the agency’s assessment stops short of declaring the succession settled.
