Anglian Water outage leaves thousands in Lincolnshire without water as schools close

anglian water says about 3, 000 customers in Grantham, Byard’s Leap, Allington and surrounding parts of western Lincolnshire are experiencing very low water or no water after a fault at a local treatment plant. On Monday, two primary schools closed because running water for drinking, sanitation and toilets was not available. Anglian Water crews are delivering bottled water to priority customers, using tankers to inject water into mains and working through the night; the company has cited power-related issues and a pump fault and expects normal service by 5: 00pm ET.
Anglian Water response and scale of the outage
About 3, 000 customers in and around Grantham have been affected, with residents in villages including Frieston, Caythorpe, Carlton Scroop, Sudbrook and Ancaster reporting very low pressure or no supply. An Anglian Water spokesperson said, “Our teams are still working hard to restore supplies for all customers following power related issues at our treatment works. The network is getting back to normal, and we know that some customers have had their supplies restored or have improved pressures. ” The spokesperson added, “We will continue throughout the night to deliver bottled water to affected customers and use tankers to inject water into the mains across the area. Our teams are working hard to restore normal service as quickly as possible. ”
Staff are prioritising medically dependent customers on the company’s priority services register for bottled deliveries. The utility has also deployed tankers to bolster mains pressure while engineers isolate and repair the fault with pumping equipment at the treatment works. Local teams say progress has been made but full restoration is not yet complete.
Local impact: schools and hospital
Helen Hunt, head teacher of Caythorpe Primary School, described the decision to close: “We checked all the toilets and water supply and we didn’t have any supply to the school. We had to inform all the parents that the school had shut due to health and safety and sanitation and hygiene issues. ” Claypole CofE Primary School also closed because running water was unavailable for pupils and staff.
The Lincolnshire Community and Hospitals NHS Group said Grantham and District Hospital was experiencing low water pressure but that the supply remained on. Hospital teams are monitoring the situation while the water company delivers support to medically dependent patients and critical facilities.
What happens next
Engineers are continuing repair and recovery work overnight, using tanker support and bottled deliveries to maintain basic needs while pumps and power systems are inspected and repaired. One report noted a pump fault as a cause of the failure, and Anglian Water expects normal service to resume by 5: 00pm ET; crews will continue to make targeted deliveries and work across affected mains until pressure and flows return to normal. Local leaders and school officials have been notified and will update communities once supplies are fully restored.
Residents still without water are advised to follow updates from the utility and to accept bottled water and tanker assistance arranged for vulnerable customers; anglian water teams say they remain on site and working to bring service back as quickly as possible.
