313 Day: Inside Detroit’s celebrations as Belle Isle reopens its Casino doors

On Friday in Detroit, 313 Day arrives with a mix of discounts, performances, and a long-awaited public moment on Belle Isle: the reopening of the Belle Isle Casino after upgrades that kept it closed since 2023. Across metro Detroit, restaurants, shops, and venues are marking the day tied to the city’s iconic area code, turning a date on the calendar into a set of places where residents can gather and spend time together.
What’s planned for 313 Day across metro Detroit?
313 Day celebrations span sports, retail, and cultural programming—each offering a different way to be “in the city” for a few hours. The Detroit Pistons are hosting their annual 313 Day celebration as the team welcomes the Memphis Grizzlies. The event begins at 5: 30 p. m. (ET) in the Chevy Plaza with activities, and the first 3, 130 fans will receive a special Pistons 313 Day chain. The night also includes a halftime performance from Skilla Baby and the Detroit Youth Choir.
Elsewhere Downtown, StockX is marking its 10-year anniversary with a three-day celebration that kicks off on 313 Day. The company describes itself as a global marketplace for cultural products, and its immersive experience will take place at the 1001 Woodward Ave. building—near StockX’s global headquarters. The first floor is set to become a fully shoppable, community-centered destination from March 13–15, featuring nearly 700 shoppable products from brands including Jordan, adidas, Supreme, and New Balance. Inventory will be priced as much as 20% below market value, and the first 100 guests each day will receive a promo code for $25 off a $125 purchase at the pop-up or on a future purchase.
In Midtown, Shinola and Soho House are teaming up for the second straight year for an afternoon program at the flagship store from 3: 13 p. m. to 6: 13 p. m. (ET), built around live performances from local artists and pop-ups including matcha and coffee, Faygo cocktails, and a Better Made chips and caviar bar, alongside custom merchandise. In the Cass Corridor, the two stores are giving away the City Bird-exclusive “Detroit Things” print with any purchase.
How did Belle Isle turn 313 Day into a reopening day?
On the island, the Belle Isle Conservancy is hosting “Your 313 Day Getaway, ” a slate of free, family-friendly activities that centers on the Belle Isle Casino’s return to the public. The casino has been closed since 2023 due to roof, interior, and infrastructure upgrades. A ribbon cutting ceremony is set for 3 p. m. (ET) Friday, Belle Isle Conservancy President and CEO Meagan Elliott said. The casino received $4. 75 million in federal relief funding, and Elliott said the investment has been visible to visitors even when the doors were shut.
“There’s been a significant amount of ARPA (American Rescue Plan Act) dollars invested in the project, and I know that everyone has been so eager to see it reopen, ” Elliott said. “You constantly see people wandering around the veranda, wondering what’s going on inside the building. We’re really excited to be able to open the doors fully and let folks take tours, and then also just celebrate that this beautiful, historic building is again open to the public. ”
The day’s schedule expands the hours of several destinations that can define a family visit to the island. The Belle Isle Aquarium and Dossin Great Lakes Museum will be open from 10 a. m. to 7 p. m. (ET), while the Belle Isle Nature Center will be open from 10 a. m. to 8 p. m. (ET). At the aquarium, “Planting Seeds, Growing Minds” storytime events for National Reading Month are scheduled at 10: 30 a. m., 11: 30 a. m., 1: 30 p. m., and 2: 30 p. m. (ET).
What does 313 Day look like on the ground at Belle Isle?
Between noon and 5 p. m. (ET) at the Remick Bandshell, visitors can experience “Portal” by designer and educator Salam Rida. Created in partnership with Michigan Central and Newlab, the project collects stories of people’s memories of the island through a mobile podcast studio. Elliott described it as a direct invitation for the public to contribute their own voice to the island’s living history.
“I’ll be doing some interviews with folks in there, ” Elliott said. “Anyone’s welcome to come and share their story. ”
Later, design and music programming builds around the aquarium and nearby pavilions. From 3 p. m. to 7 p. m. (ET) at the aquarium, the Metropolitan Museum of Design Detroit will host a Biomimicry Design Challenge, where participants can create nature-inspired solutions. Music On Belle Isle Group (MOBIG) will host activities under the Flynn Pavilion during the same 3–7 p. m. (ET) window, including instruments visitors can try out and material on the history of music on the island—a project MOBIG worked on with the Detroit Historical Society.
At the Belle Isle Gift Shop, Detroit artist Tony Whlgn will have a 313 Day capsule collection featuring limited edition t-shirts and tote bags, Elliott said. The Conservancy is also connecting the celebration to its broader organizational shift: Elliott said the events are part of the Belle Isle Conservancy’s rebrand, which includes a new website launched in January designed to make planning visits and interacting with the conservancy easier. The venture includes curated content for visitors, a space to share Belle Isle memories, a centralized calendar, and Spotify playlists for the island.
As evening approaches, the reopening turns into a social scene. The night is set to end with a house party at the Casino led by DJ Bruce Bailey from 6 p. m. to 8 p. m. (ET), limited to the first 313 guests.
Back on Belle Isle, the meaning of 313 Day sharpens into something physical: doors opening, longer hours, and people moving between the aquarium, the bandshell, and the casino with a sense that the island is not just being visited, but being returned to. The ribbon cutting is a single moment, but it carries the weight of what Elliott described—months of public curiosity from the veranda, and a city ready to step back inside.
