Mel Schilling at a turning point as her cancer spreads

mel schilling has said she does not know how long she has left to live after revealing her cancer has spread to her brain. The Married at First Sight dating coach shared the update in an Instagram post on Thursday, writing that “my light is starting to fade – and quickly. ”
What happens when Mel Schilling says there is nothing further her team can do?
In her post, Mel Schilling said she was diagnosed with colon cancer in December 2023. She later learned the cancer had spread to her lungs and has now spread to the left side of her brain.
She wrote that she had undergone radiotherapy sessions, but that her oncology team has now told her there is nothing further they can do. Describing the pace and weight of the moment, she said: “My light is starting to fade – and quickly. ”
Mel Schilling also reflected on the practical impact of her condition, writing that simple tasks have become “incredibly difficult. ” She said she does not know how long she has left, adding that she will “fight to my last breath. ”
What if treatment plans change as symptoms escalate?
Mel Schilling said that after her original diagnosis she underwent 16 rounds of chemotherapy while still filming Married at First Sight. She also said she was told she was eligible for a “groundbreaking clinical trial specific to my gene type, ” which was due to start this month.
However, she wrote that last Christmas she began experiencing “blinding headaches and numbness down my right side, ” describing a shift that arrived before the expected start of the clinical trial.
Alongside her personal update, she urged others to get checked if “something doesn’t feel right, ” framing her message as a prompt for people to pay attention to symptoms rather than dismiss them.
What happens when a major on-screen role changes mid-series?
Mel Schilling has been part of the cast of the reality TV show since 2016. She first joined Married at First Sight in Australia and later appeared on the UK version, which airs on E4.
She announced last month that she was stepping away from the Australian show to prioritise her family and health. Following her latest update, Channel 4 said on Thursday that she is a “hugely valued and much-loved” part of the Channel 4 family, adding that her “wisdom, warmth, humour and kindness shine through. ”
The channel also announced that Married at First Sight Australia expert John Aiken would step in to replace Mel Schilling for the remainder of the latest UK series, which is currently being filmed. CPL, the production company that makes the UK version of the dating show, said she is “greatly loved and respected” and that its thoughts are with her and her family.
In her post, Mel Schilling paid tribute to her family and shared a photo of herself with her husband and daughter.
