Jim Jordan catches heat from GOP colleagues who say he ‘sold out’

jim jordan is drawing fresh attention inside the Republican Party as his quieter posture in the House fuels talk that he is positioning himself for higher leadership. The shift has become more visible since President Donald Trump returned to the White House, and it surfaced again during the recent fight over Department of Homeland Security funding. At least two Republican colleagues now see the change as proof that Jordan is softening his hardline image to climb the ladder.

Jordan’s lower-key turn is raising eyebrows

Jordan, a member of the hardline House Freedom Caucus, had already tried to reach the top of the chamber after Kevin McCarthy was ousted as speaker in 2023. He failed in that bid and eventually lost out to House Speaker Mike Johnson. Since January of last year, jim jordan has taken a much lower-key approach to internal House politics, a move that was on display during the Homeland Security funding dispute.

That dispute mattered because Jordan was initially open to the Senate-passed funding bill even though it left out money for federal immigration enforcement agencies. He had noted the upsides of the plan, a stance that stood out for a lawmaker long associated with the far-right edge of his party. Jordan also advocated last month for extending a mass surveillance program, another sharp break from his past opposition to the program.

Inside the GOP, the change looks deliberate

The reaction from Republican colleagues was not subtle. One unnamed Republican House lawmaker said, “The old Jim Jordan wouldn’t have done this, ” and added, “It’s clear that he sold out in order to keep chairmanship or to move up in leadership. ” The comment underscores the belief among some House Republicans that jim jordan is recalibrating in public view.

That perception has only grown because Jordan’s shift appears broad enough to unsettle even lawmakers who disagree with him from the opposite direction. The same pattern has helped turn his behavior into a leadership story rather than a narrow policy dispute.

Democrats notice the same shift

Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., said Jordan now appears “pretty close to the center of gravity” of the Republican Party. Raskin added, “I don’t know whether he has traveled more towards the center of the Republican conference or the Republican conference has traveled more towards Jim Jordan. But in any event, it feels like he’s pretty close to the center of gravity right now. ”

That observation matters because it shows the change is being read beyond Republican circles. jim jordan, once cast as one of the party’s hardest-line voices, is now being watched as someone whose political path may be changing in real time.

What comes next for Jordan

The immediate question is whether this lower-profile approach is a temporary adjustment or a longer-term effort to stay viable for future leadership. For now, Jordan remains part of the same internal power struggle that has followed him since his failed speaker bid, and the criticism from within his own party suggests the pressure is not easing. If his muted style continues, the debate over jim jordan will likely stay tied to one central issue: whether he is changing his politics, or simply changing his timing.
