Dean Kremer optioned to minors as Orioles’ Opening Day rotation takes shape

Dean Kremer was optioned to the minor league camp in a surprising roster decision as Baltimore continued shaping its Opening Day pitching plan.
What Happens When roster math outweighs performance?
The Orioles trimmed their spring roster to 43 players and made four additional cuts, reassigning right-handers Hans Crouse, Nestor German, and Trey Gibson to minor league camp alongside the unexpected move involving Dean Kremer. The decision was framed as a product of roster needs rather than a reflection of how Dean Kremer pitched.
The early schedule is central to the calculation. Between Opening Day and April 10, the club has three off-days, reducing the immediate need for a full five-man rotation. That scheduling reality forced the Orioles to choose between six starters for a limited number of early opportunities.
What If a healthy Zach Eflin changes the final rotation slot?
Four rotation spots were described as covered by Trevor Rogers, Chris Bassitt, Kyle Bradish, and Shane Baz, leaving Dean Kremer and Zach Eflin as the likeliest candidates for the remaining job. Eflin’s status had carried uncertainty after he underwent a lumbar microdiscectomy procedure last August, creating questions about his availability for Opening Day.
Still, Baltimore felt strongly enough about Eflin’s overall health to sign him to a one-year, $10MM contract in December, and his camp progression was characterized as positive to the point that an injured list stint no longer seemed necessary. With the club not needing five starters immediately due to the early off-days, the roster crunch pushed Dean Kremer to the periphery despite the move being presented as temporary in nature.
What Happens When the schedule tightens and depth becomes urgent?
The optioning leaves Dean Kremer as the odd man out even after what was described as solid work in Baltimore’s rotation over the last four seasons. Over the 2022–25 span, Dean Kremer has a 3. 95 ERA across 599 1/3 innings, alongside a 7. 4% walk rate and a 20. 3% strikeout rate. The profile was described as lacking in punchouts and velocity, but also as that of a durable starter with mostly strong control and an improving ability to induce soft contact over the last two years.
Looking ahead, the expectation presented is that Dean Kremer will return once the Orioles move into a more regular rhythm, or sooner if an injury arises. How Baltimore deploys its starters over the season remains unsettled, including whether a six-man rotation could eventually be used, but the broader point is that pitching surpluses tend to be temporary as injuries or ineffectiveness create openings. For now, Baltimore is operating from the rare position of having too many healthy starters for too few rotation spots.
